The hope, wish, desire, and expectation of every parent is that the child will be safe during the day and that the Michigan day care center will provide the child with a clean and well staffed play and learning environment. In Washington and many other States, spring brings weather in which we can finally enjoy the outdoors and open our windows. Parents, teachers, caregivers, and day care providers should be aware that an open window can be very dangerous for curious children who lack good safety awareness. Safety precautions should be taken which can include screens and other devices that keep the child from falling out of the window. In Marysville, Washington, a 3 year boy fell out of a window. Another child was reported to have fallen within the last month of so. Emergency rooms in Washington and other States report that these incidents typically occur between the months of May and October. In Texas and other States, day care centers and child care centers have a duty to provide a safe and clean learning environment for children. It is vital that the day care workers are consistent and alert during the entire work day. Otherwise, incidents that are otherwise preventable can happen which can and do cause harm to a child. In Texas, it was reported by KVUE News that a toddler somehow got out of a day care center and was found by a bystander near a busy road where the speed limit is 60 miles per hour. There could have easily been a tragic ending to this story as well as the life of a young children. Fortunately, tragedy was avoided. In Edmond, Oklahoma, police reported that a home based day care center Royal Platinum Care had loaded guns on the property. Loaded guns were found in the attic, garage and a safe. There were no reports that the children had touched or otherwise accessed the guns; however, the State of Oklahoma Department of Human Services investigators believed that the guns violated Oklahoma laws as they pertained to day care centers. It should be noted that an incident or violation should not be solely judged on whether a child suffered personal injuries or wrongful death. Truly, the time to step in and make changes to a day care center is before tragedy strikes. Of course, the operator of the day care center can appeal or challenge any findings. The child exited the bus and then walked in front of the bus. According to Florala Police Chief Sonny Bedsole, it appeared that the school bus driver did not observe that the child got off the bus because the child may have exited off at the wrong stop or the wrong time. education%20school%20day%20care%20cup%20of%20crayons.jpgIn Trenton, New Jersey, criminal charges were filed against the driver of the transport van employed with Roselle-based On Time Transport Inc. and a day care center worker employed with Pediatric Day Health Center. The incident was very problematic in that the child had serious health conditions that put the child at significant risk for serious personal injuries. The child, Ty’on Moore, was enrolled as a student at the Pediatric Day Health Center. Ty’on was left in a van in front of the day care center for about 5 hours. Ty’on has medical problems including chronic asthma and seizures. The family was very relieved, after Ty’on was evaluated and treated at a local hospital, that more serious complications did not result from such neglect. Police reported that Ty’on was visibly dazed as a result of the incident and possible medical complications from the 5 hour stay in the van.

handcuffs%20on%20white%20background.jpgIn Minnesota and other States, parents should be able to trust teachers, day care providers, coaches, church leaders and volunteers, and scout leaders. Unfortunately, there are just too many youth leaders who should be role models but are actually out there causing harm to children. In Minnesota, a man recently pleaded guilty to producing a mobile phone video that showed a minor engaging in sexually explicit conduct. Michael Angelo Borromeo is a former Girl Scout Volunteer for the Girls Scouts of Minnesota and the Wisconsin River Valley. Mr. Borromeo was charged with several crimes including criminal sexual conduct (felony), child solicitation, and creating child pornography.
