Drawstring sweatshirts pose a serious danger to children. Recently, companies were fined for manufacturing or selling child clothing with drawstrings at the neck area. Despite prior recalls and injuries from such clothing products, manufacturers and retailers continued to distribute / sell these dangerous products. Fines serve as a civil enforcement of sorts to help stop these practices; however, no amount of money can truly compensate a child or family dealing with a tragic death or serious lifelong injuries caused by strangulation from dangerous products like these. In Illinois and other States, it is vital that day care owners provide for the safety and well being of the children. Day care centers have a duty to remove hazards from the facility. In Chicago, a day care center was recently shut down. Police officials determined that the day care center was a site for dog fighting. Obviously, the day care operators or employees put profit and sport over any concerns for the safety of the children in the day care center. It is truly amazing and frightening that people would conduct a dog fighting ring / operation in the same location as a day care center. Investigators, who raided the location of the day care center, found battered, injured, and malnourished dogs as well as blood stains on the carpet right near where children were being cared for. At the time of the raid, there were 10 children in the day care center. A spokesman, with the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, reported that the day care center was shut down. In Rhode Island and other states, high school athletes suffer head injuries / concussions every day. Some refer to concussions / brain injuries as the Invisible Injury. Since signs, symptoms, and after effects can be subtle and sometimes undetected by parents and medical providers, it is called the Invisible Injury. This makes it even more important for coaches, trainers, Emergency Rooms, doctors, and parents to use due diligence in examining the student athlete and conducting necessary medical testing and evaluation to help diagnose the injury and effects from the same. It is also important for parents and coaches to rest or sideline the athlete if it is in the child’s best interest to rest the brain and keep the child from re injuring the same area of the head or even a different area of the head. A recent article provided interesting and important information by spot lighting the head injuries / concussions of a few student athletes in Rhode Island.
